AI scribes lower burnout but not yet costs
AI medical scribes are helping doctors feel less burned out, but they’re not saving money yet or making care more efficient, according to a new report from the Peterson Health Technology Institute. These tools, which automatically transcribe patient visits, have taken off fast and are set to be the fastest adopted tech in healthcare, with about 60 companies now in the space and hundreds of millions in funding. Hospitals are seeing clear benefits for clinician well-being. Mass General Brigham saw a 40% drop in reported burnout, and MultiCare saw a 63% drop. Early results show promising impacts on reducing burnout, cognitive load, and “pajama time,” though measurable gains in productivity and revenue are still emerging. PHTI urges the industry to adopt standardized metrics for evaluating AI tools and sees ambient scribes as just the beginning of broader administrative AI transformation in healthcare. We’re bullish on this space, but long-term value will need to go beyond wellness and show up on the bottom line. (link)

Isomorphic Labs raises $600M
Isomorphic Labs, Google’s AI-driven drug discovery company, just raised $600 million in funding led by Thrive Capital, with support from GV and Alphabet. Built on DeepMind’s breakthrough AlphaFold technology, which helped earn its creators a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Isomorphic is using AI to accelerate drug development by simulating biological processes, potentially slashing R&D timelines. Co-founder Demis Hassabis says the goal is to eventually conduct most drug discovery via computers — a shift he calls the most impactful use of AI today. With partnerships already in place with pharma giants like Eli Lilly and Novartis, and fresh capital to scale talent and research, Isomorphic aims to become a full-stack life sciences powerhouse. Bill Gates thinks AI will replace doctors in the next 10 years
Bill Gates believes AI will reshape the world over the next decade — and healthcare is right at the heart of that transformation. In a recent interview, he said expertise like top-tier medical advice will soon be free and widely accessible, thanks to AI. Insights once limited to elite doctors could soon be available to anyone, anywhere. Gates calls this the era of “free intelligence,” where breakthroughs in medicine, diagnostics, and care delivery become the norm. He’s optimistic about what this means for global health: faster drug development, smarter diagnostics, and better patient outcomes. While he admits the rapid pace of change can be unsettling, he sees AI in healthcare as a massive opportunity and he’s urging the next generation to lead the charge. We agree that AI will accelerate the move toward lower-cost, more accessible care. But healthcare is still deeply human, and it’s hard to imagine a future where that element is removed entirely.
